A few years ago, I noticed that every time I came down to our kitchen/dining room area, I just felt blah. For the longest time, I could not quite put my finger on it, but something was definitely off. Then, one day I took a good look around and realized that every surface around me was brown. From flooring to table to window treatments, even the walls, a sea of boring, uninspiring brown.
At the time home decor was not on the top of my priority list. My husband had just gone through cancer treatments, my older son had major corrective surgery and my youngest needed a tremendous amount of care and supervision due to his autism. I was exhausted and barely able to keep up with the daily demands of life, let alone able to accomplish any decluttering, organizing or decorating.
Once I was able to catch my breath, I was determined to change a number of things around the house, beginning by wiping out the sea of brown in our dining room area. Seeing the brown walls disappear before my eyes was strangely therapeutic. I went on to choose a brightly colored outdoor fabric and sewed roman shades and curtains. Then I transformed every piece of furniture with colorful paint. The chairs that never really worked for us were sold on Craigslist and replaced with other Craigslist finds. The entire transformation took some time but wasn’t very expensive because I was able to sell or repurpose many pieces.
That was 5 years ago and I love walking into the room as much today as I did when I first finished it. Spurred on by that success, I set out to makeover pretty much every room in our house since then. Some of them remain works in progress, but today our home is much more of a reflection of who we are and we all love hanging out in it!
Of course, there are still areas that need to be decluttered and organized, especially since we plan to downsize in a few years. But we are at least halfway there.
A well organized, clutter-free and comfortable home is important to our well being. We all deserve to live in a place that makes us feel comfortable and safe. But more often than not, trying to tackle clutter, getting organized and making home improvements just seems overwhelming.
That is why I couldn’t wait to share this event with you!
